چکیده

We use a smooth particle hydrodynamics method (SPH) to simulate colliding rocky and icy bodies from cm-scale to hundreds of km in diameter, in an effort to define self-consistently the threshold for catastrophic disruption. Unlike previous efforts, this analysis incorporates the combined effects of material strength (using a brittle fragmentation model) and self-gravitation, thereby providing results in the “strength regime” and the “gravity regime”, and in between. In each case, the structural properties of the largest remnant are examined. Our main result is that gravity plays a dominant role in determining the outcome of collisions even involving relatively small targets. In the size range considered here, the enhanced role of gravity is not due to fracture prevention by gravitational compression, but rather to the difficulty of the fragments to escape their mutual gravitational attraction. Owing to the low efficiency of momentum transfer in col-

Identifying Extreme Risks in Critical Infrastructure Interdependencies

Critical infrastructures like our power generation facilities and water supply form highly interconnected networks that are mutually dependent and any failure can cascade through the network, resulting in devastating impact on health, safety and the economy. These catastrophic events/disruptions can be triggered by environmental accidents, geological/weather phenomena, disease pandemics, etc. T...

The Heumann-Hotzel model for aging revisited

Since its proposition in 1995, the Heumann-Hötzel model has remained as an obscure model of biological aging. The main arguments used against it were its apparent inability to describe populations with many age intervals and its failure to prevent a population extinction when only deleterious mutations are present. We find that with a simple and minor change in the model these difficulties can ...

Log-Periodic Power Law as a Predictor of Catastrophic Events: A New Mathematical Justification

To decrease the damage caused by meteorological disasters, it is important to be able to predict these disasters as accurately as possible. One of the most promising ways of achieving such a prediction comes from the observation that in the vicinity of a catastrophic event, many parameters exhibit log-periodic power behavior, with oscillations of increasing frequency. By fitting the correspondi...

Connectivity Upgrade Models for Survivable Network Design

Infrastructure networks to transport material, energy, and information are critical for today’s interconnected economies and communities, and network disruptions and failures can have serious economic and even catastrophic consequences. Since these networks require enormous investments, network service providers emphasize both survivability and cost-effectiveness in their network design decisio...
